Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!

(ST. LOUIS, MO.) Oct. 26, 2010 – Jobs are without a doubt Ed Martin’s main focus. His dedication to creating shovel ready jobs is evident from his grassroots effort Shop Local-Hire Local to his determination to stop Cap and Trade, his Agricultural Advisory Group, lowering the regulatory burden on small businesses, to simply where he buys his shoes.

Ed Martin’s pledge today is: “I will work tirelessly and do everything possible to create shovel-ready jobs for Missouri’s 3rd district. I will fight Cap and Trade and work to lower the regulatory burden on our small businesses. And I will not vote on a stimulus plan that simply benefits my family and does not create jobs.” – Ed Martin

Congressman Carnahan voted for the bailout of Chrysler. The auto company closed its Fenton plant and moved the jobs to Mexico and Canada. He never demanded any accountability in his bailout bargain vote. Carnahan also voted for spending billions on a stimulus bill that only created 568 jobs in Missouri’s 3rd district. That stimulus funneled a $107 Million cash payment to his brother, Tom Carnahan’s wind mill farm. His brother’s wind farm may be why he also voted for Cap and Trade – which would be crippling for everyone from farmers, small businesses and families. Carnahan’s vote for the government takeover of health care also proved to be job-killing in this district.

Smear your opponents and try to duck accountability for reckless spending and arrogance.

Your support is needed for victory! A combination of your generosity and a tight, frugal campaign has helped us keep pace with Russ Carnahan’s wealthy liberal friends. Can you get us over the goal line with a contribution of any amount? Do you have the means to “max out” in these last few weeks of the campaign? Your support will keep our small army of volunteers in the field and on the phones reaching out to voters ready for a return of commonsense leadership.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Press Contact: Theresa Petry, (314) 807-7077
All Other Campaign Inquiries: (314) 256-1776

Crony Capitalism at its Worst

(ST. LOUIS, MO.) September 22, 2010 –Congressman Carnahan and his crony capitalism has never been as apparent as it is with the recent discovery that his brother Tom Carnahan was funneled $107 Million in stimulus funding.

Despite playing dumb and trying to misconstrue the facts – it is plain to see. The U.S. Department of Treasury has this website – on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Actpage it has a list of those given payment “in lieu of tax credits.” As plain as day, in a list of a 1144 grants awarded, you will find listed Lost Creek Wind, LLC – aka Tom Carnahan’s wind farm. Next to his name you will find he was awarded $107,685,043.00 on July 6, 2010.

Yet Congressman Carnahan went on the radio and publicly said the money wasn’t awarded from the stimulus that he gave his rubberstamp of approval. The following is the verbatim from a talk show on KMOX September 21, 2010. Carnahan stated, “I voted for continuation of a national policy for clean energy and clean jobs. In any company in America that builds a qualifying project is entitled to get the credit.”

Credit? Tom Carnahan didn’t get a tax credit. He asked for a $90 Million credit but he received a $107 Million dollar payment in lieu of credit – or as most people call it – cash. And he got it, according to the U.S. Treasury Department, – from the stimulus.

Congressman Carnahan isn’t just trying to dodge and deflect here folks – he is blatantly lying to the American people. Unless of course he is implying that the government and U.S. Treasury Department is lying?

In a subsequent statement given to the St. Louis Post Dispatch Carnahan continued to mislead the people. His communications director, Angela Guyadeen said, “Russ Carnahan played absolutely no role in Wind Capital’s application for tax credits available to any qualified producer. Anyone who wants this credit must apply and qualify for it through an independent process.”

This reporter did his homework and called Carnahan out, “Again, it’s not a credit – it is a payment in “lieu of tax credits” for up to 30 percent of the cost of a renewable energy property.” (St. Louis Post Dispatch, Jake Wagman, Sept. 21, 2010)

Carnahan’s office did get one very tiny detail right – anyone can apply. What she failed to mention is that Tom Carnahan didn’t just apply for a credit– he received the 12th largest payout in the country -$107 Million.

“This is the very worst of Washington and an absolute insult to the people of Missouri. We have families struggling to make ends meet and a representative who instead of helping them is funneling money to his family. As I said in a letter I sent to Congressman Carnahan his brother should forfeit the money and it should be used for job re-training and to help small business startups in,” said Ed Martin.

Congressman Carnahan admitted publicly he didn’t read the stimulus bill before voting on it…but he surely can’t expect voters to be fool enough to believe he didn’t know his family would directly benefit from it. The Carnahan dynasty has profited from the people of Missouri for too long. It is time to put an end to the Carnahan corruption.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Press Contact: Theresa Petry, (314) 807-7077

A mere 568 jobs created in Missouri’s 3rd since stimulus first approved

(ST. LOUIS, MO.) August 12, 2010 –Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Congressman Carnahan back to Washington last week to sign off on yet another spending bill. Now, like the subservient Congressman Pelosi wants him to be, Carnahan has returned to his district in full spin mode. He has set up press conferences today to try and convince constituents how much the latest spending bill he approved will help them.

Well, Congressman Carnahan, if it’s as “helpful” as the stimulus bills which get your full nod of approval maybe you should step out of the spin zone. The facts are jobs are not being created and the government is digging us deeper into debt.

Missouri currently has a 9.1% unemployment rate but delve deeper into the statistics and you will see that parts of Missouri’s 3rd district are even higher. Jefferson County holds a 9.6% unemployment rate and St. Louis City holds a staggering 11.1%. St. Louis County and Sainte Genevieve Counties are 8.6% and 8.4% respectively.

The stimulus bill didn’t create jobs as Carnahan and his liberal spending friends like to claim.

Here are the job numbers from the stimulus, found on recovery.gov, for Missouri’s 3rddistrict:

Missouri’s 3rd district received $228,323,826 (Million) – far less than many other areas

Jobs created:

72 – 1st reporting period jobs

135.6 – Q4 2009 jobs

124.1 – Q1 2010 jobs

236.3 – Q2 2010 jobs

That’s a total of 568 total jobs since stimulus was approved. That means the government spent $401,978.57 per job. That costly rate begs the question; Where are the jobs Congressman Carnahan?

Outside of Washington, regular folks -if they were to even spend a small fraction of that sort of money would demand to have something in return…or we daresay they would stop spending, recognize it as a scam and not make the same costly mistake again. So as Congressman Carnahan tries to fool the people into thinking more spending is “helping” them we hope the press asks him the following questions:

1) Um, where are the jobs?

2) Why did Missouri’s 3rd only get $228,323,826 ? Seems like other places got more than their fair share?

3) $401,978.57 per job? Seriously?

“We must stop the wasteful spending and concentrate on jobs. Our children’s future depends on it! Congressman Carnahan can tout ‘programs helping families afford college tuition’ all he wants but people are more concerned with having a family sustaining job. Carnahan should spend more time in his district, maybe hold a town hall or debate, and actually listen to what his constituents are saying” said congressional candidate Ed Martin.

I heard a pastor say that you can either be humble, or be humiliated. The chart below, adapted from the slick packet used by the Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama to sell America on mortgaging our future, details how the arrogance of the Obama administration is meeting its nemesis. Far from the mild unemployment and speedy recovery, we have historically high unemployment and we seem stuck there with no end in sight.

Nothing about this is surprising. Tea party activists all across the nation warned against the $787 billion dollar stimulus. We knew from managing our own financial lives that America cannot borrow and spend its way into prosperity. The Federal government has no money of its own to waste, it can only take it from the private sector – or in this case obligate. Billions in spending will, like night follows day, lead to billions in taxes. Businesses clinging by their fingernails know that various regulations like Cap and Trade and programs such as Obamacare will increase the cost of hiring a new employee or expanding their business. Couple this with the inevitable tax increases, the massive spending is having the opposite of its promised effect.

There is zero satisfaction in pointing this out, only the bitter knowledge that Congressman Russ Carnahan lacks the basic economic understanding that government spending of this nature benefits the economy. The American constitution in defining narrowly what the Federal government may do had the added effect in keeping the Federal government out of the way of the private sector. For two centuries America was able to pay its bills, only occasionally going into debt, then retiring that debt responsibly. This congress has found a wide variety of spending opportunities and have frivolously wasted it on pet projects that do nothing to deal with our most pressing issue – Americans need jobs.

The only thing that can save America is Americans. We need congress to stop spending, reduce regulation, relax taxes and undo legislation that has been signaling businesses that the Federal government is going to punish their efforts to prosper with higher taxes and increased red tape.

America is $13 trillion in debt, but Russ is fronting an international boondoggle

Russ Carnahan has a new Limousine Liberal friend. Don Cheadle, lately in Iron Man II has glommed on to Congressman Russ Carnahan. Why? Because our congressman is pushing some cockamamie conservation scheme that “Directs the President, through the Coordinator for Global Conservation, to establish the International Conservation Strategy to help combat global natural resource and biodiversity degradation in developing countries.”

Mr. Cheadle who “has grown as a global activist since appearing in ‘Hotel Rwanda,’” has latched onto the effort to take our hard-earned cash and waste it on a Hollywood cause. Your tax dollars at work.

Thirteen trillion dollars ($13,000,000,000,000) – that’s how much debt America is in. To put this in perspective, this figure is over 90% of our gross domestic product for a year.

Put another way, every dollar produced in this nation from every hour worked, the value of every item manufactured, every service rendered and every good sold for a year would have to be pooled and used to pay off our debt. Obviously that is not how we pay off our debts, but this is the magnitude of our problem.

Any debt counselor will tell someone deeply in debt that they do not have an earning problem – they have a spending problem. Congress has for decades spent more than they took in. Even when tax cuts grew the economy they simply spent even more. Congressman Carnahan’s “global conservation” effort is just another example of a binge spender putting an expensive trinket on the credit card.

Russ Carnahan is an easy rubberstamp for Nancy Pelosi to explode the deficit. He’s voted for bailouts, he’s voted for a failed stimulus, and now he’s pushing some absurd scheme that may save a giraffe in the Serengeti, but it won’t bring the Dodge Ram back to Fenton. At least Russ Carnahan’s Hollywood buddy Don Cheadle may send a fat campaign check.

This is the sort of thing I want to end, but I will need your support. While in congress, I will refuse to go along with boondoggles like this, so I won’t be expecting the help of rich friends and foundations to take on big-government tax and spender Russ Carnahan. That’s why every dollar of support from you is crucial to our campaign. Please consider a generous contribution of $25, $50, or more as a monthly contribution. If you have the means can you plan on budgeting for maximum individual contributions? You can give $2400 before the August 3rd primary, and another $2400 for the November election. I know this is a sacrifice in tough times, but these are the measures we need to make to stop congressman Carnahan and Nancy Pelosi from further bankrupting our nation.

Press Contact: Theresa Petry, (314) 807-7077

A Timeline of the Congressman’s Wasteful Spending

(ST. LOUIS, MO) May 11, 2010 – Congressman Russ Carnahan has a long history of being fiscally irresponsible with tax dollars. The new website created and paid for by the Ed Martin for Congress Campaign offers a timeline that pinpoints his wasteful spending while in office. The name of the site www.ninetymilliondollarcarnahan.com directly correlates to the $90 million dollars in federal stimulus money allocated to Carnahan’s brother, Tom, for his windmill farm. Rubberstamp Russ Carnahan’s fiscally irresponsible actions have already cost Missouri’s 3rd district constituents millions to billions of dollars and it continues to rise. Carnahan is costing taxpayers money from his vote on the stimulus bill to help secure his family’s financial gain, to his vote on Obamacare and the deficit extension, not to mention the use of taypayer money to campaign using frank mail.

“I think families should realize the wasteful ways in which their hard earned dollars are being misused by Congressman Carnahan. The timeline shows how time after time he votes to continue the out-of-control spending rampant in Washington, D.C. Since there is little transparency and Carnahan refuses to curb his costly actions you can count on us to disburse the information to constituents ourselves,” said 3rd district congressional candidate, Ed Martin.

Since Congressman Carnahan has such a habit of spending; you can expect the website to be an ongoing work in progress – including ways he himself avoids paying taxes.

(ST. LOUIS, MO.) March 5, 2010 – The National Environmental Scorecard just gave Rep. Russ Carnahan a top score but didn’t delve into his incentive for going green. The public deserves to know and today 3rd district Congressional candidate Ed Martin sent Carnahan a letter requesting he release all documents regarding the $90 million stimulus dollars allocated for his brother’s windmill farm in DeKalb County, Missouri.

“In what reads like a fictional account of nepotism and corruption, Congressman Russ Carnahan voted for a so-called “stimulus” bill that not only did not create jobs in his district but allowed his brother to receive $90 million in taxpayer money for his company to then purchase foreign parts,” said Ed Martin.

Tom Carnahan’s $300 million wind farm “was on hold” Vice President Joe Biden told reporters while visiting a mid-Missouri factory last spring. But Biden went on say thanks to the Federal Economic Recovery Act, “We’re going to get companies like this windmill company to be able to move forward.” Interesting how it all magically changed, after his brother Russ cast his vote for the Federal Stimulus bill.”We never really liked to say it out loud,” said Tom Carnahan, president/founder of Wind Capital Group. “A few months ago, the banks were closed. Banks now have confidence to move forward … The stimulus changed everything.” (St. Joseph News, Alyson E. Raletz, April 17, 2009)

Boy did it! The stimulus funneled $90 million taxpayer’s dollars into Tom Carnahan’s project. The Democratic Policy Committee acknowledged and even touted the earmark stating, “Missouri’s largest wind energy development, funded by the Recovery Act…” (DPC, website Nov. 5, 2009)

So let’s get this straight – A proposed $300 million wind farm couldn’t even get banks to call them back for two years, but then Rep. Russ Carnahan votes to approve the Stimulus bill, and out of the blue his brother’s company is notified it will get $90 million in stimulus funds and now banks are lining up. Hmmm…pardon us for saying so but something seems a bit fishy. Should we conclude that if you need money all it takes is a family member in power?

Constituents of the 3rd district sure aren’t getting any of the windfall. The wind farm isn’t anywhere near them. And now they’re hearing part of their hard earned money given to Tom Carnahan might be going out of the country. There is a lot of controversy clouding windmill projects recently. Several Democrats in the U.S. Senate have voiced concern that the money being doled out to wind farms is in fact not creating American jobs. Senator Charles Schumer put the brakes on several wind farm deals claiming the money received from the stimulus plan for building wind turbines should stay in the US. (Global Association of Risk Professional,Thursday, December 31, 2009)

While Tom Carnahan’s company likes to claim their project “Lost Creek” will use “most” components produced in the United States. Just how much is “most?” Tom himself said in a St. Louis Post Dispatch interview the turbines he has were built in India. “…They build the turbines in India, and now they’re building the blades in Minnesota,” said Tom Carnahan. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch November 7, 2008)

Maybe Rep. Carnahan will use the excuse he didn’t read the bill and didn’t know his brother would benefit so grandly from it. Are we expected to buy that? Well at least that is a product of the U.S.
