It is becoming clear that Russ Carnahan is following the Washington Insider playbook. Don’t mention your support of the government takeover of health care. Don’t mention your support of the failed stimulus, bank bailouts or your refusal to secure America’s borders. Their advice? Smear your opponents and try to duck accountability for reckless spending and arrogance.

Your support is needed for victory! A combination of your generosity and a tight, frugal campaign has helped us keep pace with Russ Carnahan’s wealthy liberal friends. Can you get us over the goal line with a contribution of any amount? Do you have the means to “max out” in these last few weeks of the campaign? Your support will keep our small army of volunteers in the field and on the phones reaching out to voters ready for a return of commonsense leadership.

America is $13 trillion in debt, but Russ is fronting an international boondoggle

Russ Carnahan has a new Limousine Liberal friend. Don Cheadle, lately in Iron Man II has glommed on to Congressman Russ Carnahan. Why? Because our congressman is pushing some cockamamie conservation scheme that “Directs the President, through the Coordinator for Global Conservation, to establish the International Conservation Strategy to help combat global natural resource and biodiversity degradation in developing countries.”

Mr. Cheadle who “has grown as a global activist since appearing in ‘Hotel Rwanda,’” has latched onto the effort to take our hard-earned cash and waste it on a Hollywood cause. Your tax dollars at work.

Thirteen trillion dollars ($13,000,000,000,000) – that’s how much debt America is in. To put this in perspective, this figure is over 90% of our gross domestic product for a year.

Put another way, every dollar produced in this nation from every hour worked, the value of every item manufactured, every service rendered and every good sold for a year would have to be pooled and used to pay off our debt. Obviously that is not how we pay off our debts, but this is the magnitude of our problem.

Any debt counselor will tell someone deeply in debt that they do not have an earning problem – they have a spending problem. Congress has for decades spent more than they took in. Even when tax cuts grew the economy they simply spent even more. Congressman Carnahan’s “global conservation” effort is just another example of a binge spender putting an expensive trinket on the credit card.

Russ Carnahan is an easy rubberstamp for Nancy Pelosi to explode the deficit. He’s voted for bailouts, he’s voted for a failed stimulus, and now he’s pushing some absurd scheme that may save a giraffe in the Serengeti, but it won’t bring the Dodge Ram back to Fenton. At least Russ Carnahan’s Hollywood buddy Don Cheadle may send a fat campaign check.

This is the sort of thing I want to end, but I will need your support. While in congress, I will refuse to go along with boondoggles like this, so I won’t be expecting the help of rich friends and foundations to take on big-government tax and spender Russ Carnahan. That’s why every dollar of support from you is crucial to our campaign. Please consider a generous contribution of $25, $50, or more as a monthly contribution. If you have the means can you plan on budgeting for maximum individual contributions? You can give $2400 before the August 3rd primary, and another $2400 for the November election. I know this is a sacrifice in tough times, but these are the measures we need to make to stop congressman Carnahan and Nancy Pelosi from further bankrupting our nation.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Press Contact: Theresa Petry, (314) 807-7077

A Timeline of the Congressman’s Wasteful Spending

(ST. LOUIS, MO) May 11, 2010 – Congressman Russ Carnahan has a long history of being fiscally irresponsible with tax dollars. The new website created and paid for by the Ed Martin for Congress Campaign offers a timeline that pinpoints his wasteful spending while in office. The name of the site www.ninetymilliondollarcarnahan.com directly correlates to the $90 million dollars in federal stimulus money allocated to Carnahan’s brother, Tom, for his windmill farm. Rubberstamp Russ Carnahan’s fiscally irresponsible actions have already cost Missouri’s 3rd district constituents millions to billions of dollars and it continues to rise. Carnahan is costing taxpayers money from his vote on the stimulus bill to help secure his family’s financial gain, to his vote on Obamacare and the deficit extension, not to mention the use of taypayer money to campaign using frank mail.

“I think families should realize the wasteful ways in which their hard earned dollars are being misused by Congressman Carnahan. The timeline shows how time after time he votes to continue the out-of-control spending rampant in Washington, D.C. Since there is little transparency and Carnahan refuses to curb his costly actions you can count on us to disburse the information to constituents ourselves,” said 3rd district congressional candidate, Ed Martin.

Since Congressman Carnahan has such a habit of spending; you can expect the website to be an ongoing work in progress – including ways he himself avoids paying taxes.

Q: What Do You Get When You Rubberstamp a Health Care Bill Without Reading it?

A: Taxpayer Funded Viagra for Sex Offenders

When Nancy Pelosi said we “…have to pass the bill so we can find out what’s in it” many of us had a laugh at the apparent gaffe. Now we learn of a truly awful component of the health care “reform” bill rubber-stamped by Russ Carnahan.

The Congressional Research Service confirms that the health care reform legislation has no legal safeguard against a convicted sex offender from receiving treatment, including treatment for erectile dysfunction. Put in blunt terms, if a rapist or child molester enrolls in a health plan as part of a government sponsored exchange, there is no way to prevent that individual from receiving Viagra at taxpayer expense.

Does Russ Carnahan really think giving convicted child molesters Viagra on the public dime is good policy? If not, what exactly did he do to stop it? Senator Tom Coburn anticipated this issue, and introduced a bill that would deny funding for these sort of treatments to such persons, but his bill was defeated along ideological lines. Even after Senator Coburn’s warning shot, Russ Carnahan negligently stood by and did nothing.

2000 plus pages of legislation is a breeding ground for unintended consequences. Carnahan, Pelosi and others mocked citizens who raised concerns over the complexity and overreach of their version of reform. Every week now that this “reform” is in place, we see a new fiasco erupt.

Lack of humility, indifference to public concern and sheer hubris of “congress knows best” is the leadership style of Russ Carnahan. Do you think he read the bill? Do you think he would oppose his patron Speaker Pelosi? This among many reasons is why I am running to defeat him. Putting Russ Carnahan out of office will be an important step to sweep arrogant liberals like “Pass It, Then Find Out” Pelosi out of leadership and will serve to put the brakes on President Obama’s tax and debt agenda.

Join me in restoring commonsense wisdom to congress by contributing to the campaign. Russ Carnahan will have plenty of liberal cash from his connected friends. To be competitive monthly contributions are particularly helpful in building a stable financial base. We certainly welcome individual contributions of any amount. Can you find $25, $40, $70 or more in your budget to help us repeal Russ Carnahan?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has apologized for remarks he made back in 2008 that questioned then-senator Obama’s authenticity as a black man. Given that the senator has implied that we who oppose the big spending, big debt, government bailout and takeover agenda of Congress and the President are acting out of racist motivations, his hypocrisy is large enough to be seen from space.

Harry Reid’s remorse is prompted because these unfortunate comments recorded in a book coming out soon. His remorse and apology is at least in part meant to preempt any political fallout. President Obama has immediately and unconditionally accepted this apology. So have those on the left who derive their political influence by being arbiters of who is and who is not “correct” on matters of race. These same actors are not so forgiving of those who are not politically useful to his party members and leaders like Speaker Pelosi and President Obama. If there is power to be gained by such hustlers, don’t count on the same kind of graciousness.

Harry Reid’s comment would lead a rational person to understand that the senator believed that there is some set of attributes by which a black man is authentic, and absent those attributes, he is not. It is contemptuous of individuality, it is at odds with the profoundly American ideal that we are each our own man and are born unencumbered and free and able to be who we will.

This was not a youthful indiscretion. Less than two years ago, one of the most powerful men in America thought that there was a right way and a wrong way to be a black man. Hopefully, even at this late stage in his career, Senator Reid can update his prejudices to include men like our president. Fortunately for Harry Reid, he is politically useful and won’t have his career destroyed.

Will Russ Carnahan reflect publicly on the prejudice of his own party’s leadership? Will his sister Robin who hopes to be our state’s junior senator? I stand ready to be proven wrong, but I won’t be holding my breath. Russ Carnahan’s party has a well-established pattern of only denouncing prejudice – real or imagined – when there is a political advantage.

Below, I have scanned the elaborate and expensive mailing that came to my home and to the homes of citizens of the third district. It was sent by our Congressman Russ Carnahan from his official office – paid for by our tax dollars. This taxpayer-funded eight panel “advertisement” for the Carnahan-Pelosi-Obama health care bill includes hundreds of words … these words seem to be trying explain to his constituents the contents and implications of the thousands of pages of this health care bill, a bill that has yet to be finalized by Congress. Despite this, Congressman Carnahan’s taxpayer-funded brochure tries to lay out its benefits to Missourians.

I am not impressed. Congressman Carnahan thinks he can “explain” his support for the government takeover of health care with eight slick pages paid for by our tax dollars. For those of you who like a side order of insult with your injury, in this time of exploding deficits, this mailing did not cost a few bucks but probably close to $200,000.

Please feel free to review the brochure. Here is a downloadable version (Acrobat – Large File). I have my opinion of the truth of Congressman Carnahan’s statements in the brochure (I know that he is lying), but I invite your opinions and your specific comments. Please use the comments section below to register your view. All civil remarks will be posted regardless of your perspective. Disputers of fact are invited to show references.

Finally, if you want a town hall meeting with Congressman Carnahan to have him fill in the gaps left by the mailing you and I paid for, please sign our petition.

Download Statement: Nov 7 2009 Health Care Vote Statement from Ed Martin (Acrobat)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Nov. 7, 2009
Statement of Ed Martin, Candidate for Congress, MO-03:

“Tonight, Russ Carnahan once again failed to stand up for the people of Missouri’s 3rd District. Instead, he chose to rubber-stamp Nancy Pelosi’s latest trillion-dollar spending spree at the expense of Missouri’s working families, seniors and small businesses. And as if that weren’t enough, Carnahan made it clear tonight that he thinks our tax dollars should pay for abortions.

What working families want Congress to address is real health care reform; what they got tonight was a haphazard, reckless bill that will lead to higher taxes, disastrous cuts to Medicare, lower quality care, and handouts to special interests.

In my over 50 “Ask Ed Anything” gatherings, I have heard the commonsense ideas that I embrace: fighting for competition in health care by cutting down burdens on portability, more power for patients to speak directly to their doctors, and common sense options for families. But just like a Stimulus Bill that promised “shovel-ready jobs” and delivered only special interest giveaways and handouts, this so-called “health care reform” bill is yet another disastrous plan to kill jobs and punish working families, while growing government power.

“Americans lost tonight. May God help us as we move forward and pray that the Senate blocks this bill.”

Comment from the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC):

“By voting for the trillion dollar takeover of healthcare, Russ Carnahan has sold out the 185,000 Missouri seniors who rely on Medicare Advantage healthcare benefits. Carnahan’s decision to cave into political pressure from Nancy Pelosi instead of standing up for Missouri seniors is a stunning betrayal that Carnahan will pay for at the ballot box next November.” — Tom Erickson, NRCC spokesman

House Healthcare Bill Slashes Medicare Advantage Benefits. “To pay for the expansion of coverage, the bill cuts Medicare’s projected spending by more than $400 billion over a decade. It also imposes a tax surcharge of 5.4 percent on income over $500,000 in the case of individuals and $1 million for families.” (DAVID ESPO, “.Obama asks House to vote on health care bill,” Associated Press, 11/7/09)

UPDATE: 12:45 PM – I have been trying to get through to Carnahan’s office for half an hour. Anyone able to talk to someone?

Your fellow citizens need your help, today is the day to act.

We need reform in our health care system, but Nancy Pelosi, Russ Carnahan and a host of representatives are working to ram a health care bill through congress that will wreck the health insurance industry and load up the federal budget with trillions of dollars in costs.

Among the outrages:

In the near future, a family may have to pay for a $15,000 government approve health insurance plan or risk penalties including going to jail.

Over 111 new bureaucracies to control and regulate health care.

Insurance mandates, among them a requirement to fund abortions.

So far, common sense men and women in congress from both parties have been holding the line, but they need your help and encouragement. Despite the protests, phone calls and hundreds of people visiting Washington DC to express their opposition to this monstrosity, they are trying to get this to a vote.

How You Can come to the Aid of your Friends and Family
