Obama airs another staged production; Ed Martin holds public Town Hall on Health Care

(ST. LOUIS, MO.) Feb. 25, 2010 – President Obama’s bipartisan Health Care Summit to lay out his “new” proposed health care reform will be televised today on C-SPAN. The six-hour meeting between 12 Democratic Congress members and nine Republicans has been advertised as a roundtable to solve the problems plaguing the $2.5 trillion U.S. industry. But it’s nothing more than a staged production.

“The majority of voters opposed the previous health care takeover the President attempted to burden us with. This plan is without a doubt no different, since he and Congressman Carnahan refuse to listen to the people. The President claims compromises and changes were made. Well you can change the cover of a magazine but it still reads the same, and people aren’t buying it,” said 3rd district Congressional Candidate Ed Martin.

Even members of his own party don’t believe it or want it. In an interview on Fox news Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) said, “We have some real legislative and procedural concerns with what the leadership is trying to do with this legislation.” Stupak called the proposed compromises by Obama “unacceptable.”

What Obama is trying to do is force his vision of health care reform on an unwilling society. Just after the President called for the summit meeting Rasmussen conducted a poll and found 61% of voters think Congress should scrap the plan and start all over. Just yesterday another poll showed 71% of voters are unhappy with Congress, that’s the highest level ever reported by Rasmussen.

“The President, holding this summit, is just wasting more time. He is turning our health care into a soap opera, setting the stage, placing his actors, but not even re-writing the script. They should be focusing on what people really want. As a matter of fact I will hold another Town Hall on Health Care and invite both the President and Congressman Carnahan to attend. If they were to listen to the people, like I do, they would be able to come up with a health care reform bill that was by the people – for the people,” said Martin.

What: “We the People Health Care Summit”

When: Wednesday, March 3rd from 7pm-9pm.

Where: Two Hearts Banquet Center located at 4532 South Lindbergh Blvd.

Congressman Carnahan was sent an invite. But he may be too busy in Washington to listen to his constituents before voting on any health care reform bill. Let’s hope he at least reads this bill.

What About Earmarks?

The following comment was posted in another blog page. I thought it deserved a full-throated response.

Ed,

This is my major gripe..Republicans who claim fiscal conservatism. voted against the stimulus,..but still earmark funds, and lobby for constituents to get stimulus funds.

Hey, I will vote and donate $$$ to a candidate, incumbent who, votes for reduced spending, AND does not earmark, doe not lobby for government spending for his district!!

I worked as a contractor at two Federal Agencies..IT IS MY DEEPLY HELD BELIEF: you can eliminate 40.0% of the Federal Civilian Work Force…and the work would get done.  The feather bedding is that pervasive!!!!

So where are you on this????

Believe me, when I write the check for my taxes I fume about the pork-barrel spending in which both parties indulge. It’s common for pols to invoke “the children” for this policy or that, but my children right this minute will owe at least $40,000 – and this is just the debt that the Federal government has on the books.  Unfunded liabilities are a looming concern that dwarfs even this figure.

Business Round Table Wrap Up (Feb 23, 2010)

Ed Martin with small business owners discussing the current business climate

Tuesday afternoon (Feb 23, 2010) I had the opportunity to have a round table discussion at Imo’s Pizza in South County.  The owner Brian was kind enough to host this discussion with fellow business owners.  After a few minutes of conversation and enjoying good St. Louis style pizza and toasted ravioli, we began to go over concerns they have about the current business environment.

“I don’t need a loan, I need customers” was one of Brian’s poignant statements.  He was addressing the obsession this President has with getting banks to lend.  Certainly there are businesses who depend on access to lines of credit, but Brian’s concern was the fact that no amount of loans would make up for the fact that his customer base is seeing their disposable income eroded.  Some are out of work but more are feeling the crunch of other issues such as increased consumer prices.  Brian believed these factors were forcing his customers to tighten their belts.

Energized by recent Cook Report, Ed Martin files for office

(ST. LOUIS, MO.) Feb. 23, 2010 – 3rd District Congressional Candidate Ed Martin was the first to file for the office this morning. Today is the first day to file for the primary election August 3rd. Martin’s grassroots campaign continues to pick up speed. His “Take Back Our Country” trivia fundraiser this past Saturday drew a sell-out crowd of more than 500 supporters. The event, emceed by Dan Buck, was a rousing success. It came on the heels of an exploding “Defeat Rubberstamp Carnahan” money bomb. Martin’s campaign went well over its goal of $9,000. The money bomb was launched on February 17th, the anniversary of the failed federal stimulus. The goal represented $100 for every million in stimulus money that was allotted for the wind farm ofCarnahan’s brother Tom. The money bomb was prompted by the huge show of support for Ed Martin’s first on-line campaign ad. “Rubber Stamp Russ Carnahan.” NBC political director Chuck Todd mentioned it in his “All the Right Moves” list in his popular “First Read” column.

Ed Martin’s grassroots fundraising is quickly closing the gap on Carnahan’s deep pockets backing him in Washington. Word of Martin’s success is spreading. Just last week The Politico released the following: “Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo), the brother of Missouri Senate Candidate Robin Carnahan, is suddenly facing his first tough reelection against attorney Ed Martin, who starts the year with nearly as much campaign cash as the incumbent, The Cook Report now rates the once-safe seat, formerly held by former House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt, in the “likely Democratic” territory.”  (The Politico, Josh Kraushaar, Feb. 18, 2010)

Since announcing his candidacy just five short months ago, Ed Martin has seen his support skyrocket. “I am so grateful for the show of support I’m seeing from all over the Third District. Together we can take back our country,” said Martin.

Ed Martin is having a Small Business Roundtable at the Imo’s located at 6197 Telegraph Road at 1:30pm today Tuesday, February 23.  He will be available for interviews immediately following.

Money Bomb Success!

Last week we announced a “Money Bomb” – in essence a short-term fundraising drive often  in response to an event.  Supporters suggested it after the successful launch of “Rubber Stamp Carnahan”, our first online video.  We put one together and set a goal of $100 for every million Russ Carnahan’s brother Tom stands to receive in taxpayer dollars from the stimulus to build his wind farm.

You all responded wonderfully.  We exceeded our goal by nearly 400 dollars.  Fundraising is one of those tough jobs a candidate simply has to do. It is especially hard to ask hardworking men and women who are already over-taxed and over-regulated to dig down and contribute just to get a congress that will stay off their back.  The gracious and generous way you all have been supporting the campaign is humbling to me.  We have almost as much in the bank as Russ Carnahan, and we are being far more careful with our resources than he is.  If we stay on this pace, he won’t be able to just buy the election with a blanket of advertising.

Trivia Night Wrap-Up

Ed Martin address the Trivia Night Crowd

(Scroll down for Video from supporter Bob)

Over 500 people attended the “Take Back our Country Trivia Challenge” fundraising event.  Dan Buck performed wonderfully as the master of ceremonies.  The tables were all named after townships and municipalities in the third district.  I wish it was as easy as walking 10 feet to go from Affton to Herculaneum, but I was able to shake hands and say hello to many of you.  You can see in the photos below that we were wall-to-wall people all in attendance to have a good time and support the campaign.  I believe this sort of fundraising event is the quintessential grassroots activity that brings people together for a good time as well as supporting the cause of good government, and I was honored and gratified that so many of you came.

Special thanks to all who donated items for the silent auction.

Politico Says Carnahan Faces Tough Reelection

(ST. LOUIS, MO.) Feb. 18, 2010 – A report released by The Politico late this afternoon downgrades Rep. Russ Carnahan’s chances of being reelected. The article points to data collected by The Cook Political Report, an independent, non-partisan newsletter which analyzes elections and campaigns. Today it changed the 3rd District Congressional Race from solid Democrat to likely Democrat.

Where are the Jobs? (Video)

The stimulus was pitched to America as a way of keeping unemployment at 8% or under.  We are now at 10%.
