(St. Louis) – October 11, 2011 - Ed Martin, candidate for US Congress in Missouri’s 2nd district issued the following statement on the Republican led Missouri House’s support of the F-35 Fighter Jet manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corp. in Texas.

“The last thing the Missouri House should be doing is encouraging the federal government to continue the practice of picking winners and losers based on political connections,” said Martin. ”In times like these, it is unfortunate that lobbyists are still able to direct taxpayer dollars as they see fit.”

“The most important job of the federal government is to make sure the men and women in our Armed Forces get the very best tools they need to succeed. Boeing has a long record of creating high-quality products in a timely fashion without breaking the bank.”

St. Louis - “Saturday afternoon, Representative Gabrielle Giffords, members of her staff and some of her constituents were gunned down while holding a constituent meeting in Tuscon Arizona. Our first response as fellow citizens is to pray for their lives and health, and pray for peace for their families.”

“As we reflect on this terrible event, we need to bear in mind that this assault transcends a mere violent crime. It is an attack on the very concept of self-government. Even if it is determined that this vicious crime was not politically motivated, the result will be a chilling effect on public gatherings between our political leaders and those they are sworn to represent.”

“There is no place in America for this sort of violence, there is no justification. This was an act of wanton evil and the perpetrator deserves the full, relentless penalty of the law.”

Carnahan Can’t Run on His Record: Political Hatchet Man Comes to His Rescue

Russ Carnahan cannot run on his voting record, so he – like Democrats all over the country – are resorting to lies, smears and proxy attacks to tear down their opponents. Religious bigotry is not beneath the party elders trying to protect Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Up to now, the filthiest assault took place in Kentucky when a Democrat accused his challenger of denouncing Christianity as a hoax. Even Claire McCaskill called it “dangerous.”

Russ Carnahan may yet take the dubious crown of “Most Appalling Smear of 2010.” His campaign manager Angela Barranco, air dropped in from Washington DC has long-standing connection with political hatchet-man Michael Corwin. Corwin is a “researcher” (Much like Al Capone was an entrepreneur) in various races where Barranco has been on staff or connected through the party. Corwin has been tasked to dig up or fabricate dirt on opponents of Barranco’s clients. His method is to spread unsubstantiated claims from fellow hacks. He has smeared men and women who are running for office in ways that would make Joseph McCarthy proud. His “clients” contribute to one another and pass him around as needed, a tool in their pursuit of power.

Corwin found a candidate sufficiently desperate to overcome whatever dignity that might remain within them to accept his “help.” Russ Carnahan is that candidate.

Corwin’s approach in service to Russ Carnahan is to imply that I was somehow involved with the criminal conduct of priests within the St. Louis Archdiocese. The proof? I worked there. Many people have served faithfully and to the best of their ability in churches all over St. Louis. Is it now the new standard that Catholics who serve their church are open to being slandered like this?

To speak directly to the implied accusation: I worked for the Catholic Church doing education and advocacy about charity and service to our community. I had zero involvement or authority on the adjudication or disposition of those accused of crimes or wrongdoing. The only scandal I was responding to was that the Human Rights Office was supporting goals and making contributions to organizations that reflected poorly on the Church and her mission.

The abuse scandals that has been rocking the church for years is a still-open wound. There is still much work to be done to heal and make whole those who were betrayed by the men and women of the Church. Much work is being done by men and women in the church who tirelessly pour their hearts into these victims. Dragging this scandal into the political world is a heartbreaking tactic. This is not being done to pursue justice, healing or reckoning. It is a vulgar attempt to maintain power by an unpopular politician.

This is a lie so awful that I was shocked to learn the connections with Russ Carnahan’s office, but I ought not have been. His inner-circle of supporters have been implying this smear was coming with questions and statements in online forums that ordinarily would not be dignified by a response. We initially wrote this off as overly-zealous volunteers, but now we see that Russ Carnahan’s inner circle of activists were telegraphing the Carnahan campaign strategy.

This is why good people are not willing to run for office. This foul assault is not a symptom, it is a cause. When only shameless vermin can stomach running for office, that’s all we’ll have in office. If Russ Carnahan finds this sordid McCarthyism appalling, I call upon him to say so publically and hold those who hatched this plan accountable. We already know what kind of representative Russ Carnahan is. If he does not call out the cockroach Corwin, then we will know what kind of man Carnahan is.

August Poll Results Prove Carnahan “Endangered Democrat”

(ST. LOUIS, MO.) August 18, 2010 –An August 17^th, 2010 poll conducted by a non-partisan group, We Ask America, shows Congressman Carnahan is in trouble. As an incumbent with years of name recognition under his belt Carnahan was unable to even pull 50% of the poll.

Just yesterday Congressman Carnahan sent a letter to his supporters saying he’s in a rough spot and acknowledged he’s at the top of the “Endangered Democrats” list. The article on the poll, called Havoc in the Heartland, points out that “Plus, the Carnahan family has its detractors even among local Democrats, and some of those most ardent ones are rumored to have both hands on the rug upon which Russ Carnahan stands.”

Meanwhile congressional nominee Ed Martin, without having done any substantial advertising, polled at 39%. Ed Martin has however spent a lot of time traveling Missouri’s 3^rd district meeting with constituents and local small business owners, holding town halls on everything from health care to Veteran’s needs, and hosting more than 200 “Ask Ed Anything” meetings.”

This poll showing our campaign within 9 points, proves an upstart first-time candidate can challenge the scion of a big-name Washington DC dynasty. The people of the Third District deserve better, deserve someone fighting on their side for our American jobs. I will join them in fighting.”

Adding to the tightness of the race is the fact that Ed Martin’s fundraising numbers are neck and neck with Congressman Carnahan, with the cash on hand gap at less than $80,000.

And as the article says, “Still, Carnahan remains below 50%, and if Martin gets a toehold, the hill isn’t that steep to climb.”

You may recall the Cook Report, back in February, swung the once-safe seat, formerly held by former House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt, to a “likely democrat” which is in Ed Martin’s favor.

Politico followed up the statistics from the Cook Report with an article stating, “Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo), the brother of Missouri Senate candidate Robin Carnahan, is suddenly facing his first tough reelection against attorney Ed Martin, who starts the year with nearly as much campaign cash as the incumbent.”

“My wife, Carol, was given gifts of stock by her deceased grandmother and her parents to take care of our children’s education and welfare. Thanks to the current Congress and its wasteful spending, our three children are already in debt for more than $40,000 each. My wife’s stock ownership was disclosed as required by the election process. The reason for such a disclosure is to highlight any possible conflicts of interest regarding decisions made as a member of Congress. The glaring conflict of interest that needs to be investigated is the money Congressman Carnahan funneled to family members through wind farms and Planned Parenthood Federation of America.”

Statement from Ed Martin on State of the Union Address

Ed Martin released the following statement after President Obama’s State of the Union address tonight:

“There is a great deal to respond to in the President’s remarks. I’ll focus on spending and jobs. I recall my grandpa saying to his misbehaving grandchildren, ‘Your actions speak so loudly, I can hardly hear what you are saying.’ This is commonsense American wisdom and it sure is lacking in Washington, D.C. these days as our leaders say one thing and do another.”

“Tonight, Americans heard President Obama’s words read with great style. But Americans are tired of mere words and are demanding substance over style. President Obama and his Congress have for over a year enacted measures that have been wasteful and have failed to improve the lives of Americans. They have spent trillions of dollars on special interest giveaways, given some states kickbacks and payouts to buy congressional votes and have otherwise lost focus on what Americans are most concerned about.”

“Here at home in the Third Congressional District, Russ Carnahan is in lockstep with the President’s agenda, proving he too is out of touch and does not care about his constituents interests. He voted for the nearly $1 trillion so-called stimulus bill that promised jobs but failed to deliver. Carnahan voted to give Chrysler $18 billion. Chrysler took the money, closed the plant and sent the jobs out of the country. Carnahan supports Obama’s misguided health care “reform” proposal despite the fact that it will raise taxes and will inevitably cut care for our seniors.”

“While I support calls to freeze spending, President Obama’s words again are already out of tune with his action. He is freezing only certain spending. He plans to keep spending billions overseas even as Americans struggle here at home. Given that he is already engaging in sleight of hand, how can we believe the most profligate spender in American history or his free-spending, rubber-stamping congressmen like Russ Carnahan will change?”
