Carnahan and Rangel- Two Peas in a Pod?

(ST. LOUIS, MO.) March 4, 2010 – New York Rep. Charlie Rangel announced Wednesday he will temporarily step down as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. His leave of absence comes in light of an ethics committee report citing a long list of violations and his fellow Democrats turning their backs on him. Speaker Nancy Pelosi who has been in Rangel’s corner from the start just decided not to continue endorsing Rangel.

Where is Rep. Russ Carnahan on the issue? He voted not once but twice in favor of turning a blind eye to the corruption clearly rampant among his crooked cronies like Rangel in Congress.

In July, 2008 Carnahan voted to table an effort to censure Rangel regarding an audit of his taxes and campaign violations. (AP August 1, 2008) Congressman Carnahan obviously doesn’t see anything wrong with Rangel’s campaign finance “work.” Why would he? Carnahan himself is blameworthy of campaign ethics violations. He probably felt sorry for Rangel knowing how hard it can be when you’re caught. Carnahan was leader of the Missouri House Democratic Campaign Committee when the state Ethics Commission found him culpable of various violations. (AP March 23, 2006)

There was a call for Rangel to lose his committee post too but thanks to his partners in profiteering, like Carnahan and Pelosi, Rangel remained. (AP Sept. 18, 2008) So despite documents from an ethics committee report that Rangel violated House rules by taking corporate funded trips to the Caribbean, he stayed in his position of power. We can thank Congressman Carnahan for his continued support of this sort of corruption. Actually these types of trips seem to be one of Carnahan’s favorite parts of the job. Rubberstamp Russ was called out recently by the New York Times as being a leader in taking privately funded Congressional trips. Sorry Congressman these trips aren’t just a perk of the job – don’t try to use Rangel’s excuse of “oops I didn’t know.” These types of back room deals prevalent in Washington are not acceptable –not in America.

“The amount of cover-ups and the whole ‘I’ve got your back if you’ve got mine’ mentality is an epidemic plaguing Congress. You can’t re-write the rule book to fit your desires. You have Rangel who is in charge of this powerful tax-writing committee in cahoots with the likes of Carnahan and Pelosi and they are deciding our future. Rangel and the rest of his shady cohorts should take a permanent leave of office,” said 3rd Congressional Candidate Ed Martin.
