(ST. LOUIS, MO.) Feb. 5, 2010 – Fed up with a failed jobs stimulus, lack of employment, and trickling business some 40 Jefferson County residents filed into Surdyke Harley Davidson in Festus Tuesday night. 3rd District Congressional Candidate Ed Martin hosted the Jobs Town Hall so he could listen to their concerns. He heard from employees and employers alike and together discussed what it will take to create shovel ready jobs here in Missouri.
Meanwhile Congressman Carnahan spent the day meeting with German industry and trade representatives. In Carnahan’s own blog on his government website he touts “recent positive economic indicators.” He talks about an “encouraging number” in regards to jobs and credits the stimulus package saying it “has had a positive impact.” However the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports unemployment almost hitting double digits in Missouri in the past few months. Proof Carnahan is out of touch with what’s happening right in his own district. It’s no wonder a feeling of uncertainty echoed throughout the meeting.
Martin listened to the people’s stories, like that of Tim Surdyke, owner of Surdyke Harley Davidson in Festus. He is just one of many small business owners who watched the government bail-out car companies, then throw more money into the Cash for Clunkers program, while he watched his business dwindle.
“Congress needs to wake up and realize dumping money on the problem is just a gold-plated band aid. What the economy needs to create jobs is to invest in infrastructure and give small businesses help they can actually use,” said Martin.
