(St. Louis, Mo) Jan. 27, 2010 – Congressional Candidate Ed Martin today called on President Barack Obama to admit that the $787 billion Economic Stimulus Bill that he and Congressional Democrats pushed through almost one year ago has failed to help thousands of unemployed Missourians find work. Martin’s opponent, Rep. Russ Carnahan, voted for the bill.
This morning, Martin called on the president to explain the failure in tonight’s State of the Union Address.
“The President and Russ Carnahan keep trying to convince us that things are getting better, but Missouri’s unemployment numbers tell the real story: As of last month, 9.6 percent of our neighbors, friends and family-members were still looking for jobs and a way to pay their bills and feed their families,” said Martin. “To me, that’s just unacceptable and I sincerely hope the president and his supporters in Congress admit that tonight so we can move on to find real solutions for getting people back to work.”
Martin will hold his own “Jobs Town Hall” Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. in Jefferson County. The forum will take place in a meeting room adjacent to Surdyke Harley-Davidson’s showroom at 2435 Highway 67 in Festus. A recent “Town Hall on Health Care” in South St. Louis County drew more than 450 voters upset about the president’s trillion-dollar health care plan. Martin organized the event after Carnahan ignored repeated requests that he hold a meeting with voters before voting on a final version of the bill.
Martin is running against Carnahan in Missouri’s 3rd Congressional District, which includes south St. Louis, parts of west and south St. Louis County, and Jefferson and Ste. Genevieve Counties.
